What is an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan?
This is a non-invasive eye test that has revolutionised the assessment and treatment of retinal eye diseases. When you are being assessed for your retina health, this test often provides valuable information in diagnosing and managing your eye problem. The test often needs to be repeated on certain visits to assess your recovery, and to decide whether you need further treatment or not.
With an OCT, each of the layers of the retina can be mapped in microscopic detail, and we can objectively measure the changes in the retina that occur for example in age-related macular degeneration or diabetic eye disease.
As with the latest advances, the technology is expensive, and unfortunately there is no Medicare or private fund rebate.
It is covered under DVA Insurance. Therefore, when this test is necessary for you, you will have to pay for the test yourself. The fee will depend on the complexity of the test required from the OCT machine. Under certain circumstances some of this fee may be claimed as a tax deduction.
Please feel free to contact your health fund and local politician to raise the issue that Australia is lagging behind by not having Medicare cover this important test currently.
